Theoretical folklore studies; mythology, epics and traditional literature of peoples of Mongolia, contemporary Russian urban folklore.
Education
- In 1965 he graduated from the philological faculty of Moscow state University (head of the diploma project – E. M. Meletinsky).
- Since 1966 – regular participant of Summer schools organized by Yu. M. Lotman at the University of Tartu, where he made his first scientific reports and publications (1966).
- 1969–1992 – researcher at the Institute of world literature of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where he studied the traditional literature of Mongolia; folklore expeditions in Mongolia (1974, 1976, 1978; materials are published in Moscow and Wiesbaden).
- 1973 – PhD thesis («Epic traditions of the peoples of Central Asia and the problem of literary contacts between East and West in the middle ages»).
- 1985 – Dr. Sci. thesis («Epic traditions in Mongolian classical literature. Genesis and evolution»).
